Description
The contribution of the sixth world champion Mikhail Botvinnik to modern chess cannot be overestimated. Almost all of his signature opening schemes have stood the test of time and are still used at the highest level – in a modernized form, of course. The strongest points of Botvinnik's work are the connection between the opening and the middlegame, complex strategic concepts, and the technique of realizing an advantage. Many generations of chess players have learned and continue to learn this from the example of his games. It is more difficult to cultivate the same indomitable will to win that distinguished the patriarch of Soviet chess, but here too his example is inspiring. Mikhail Botvinnik sought out the smallest resources to continue the fight, sometimes "squeezing water out of a stone" – just like Magnus Carlsen does today.
"Botvinnik has a lot of quality games, strong opponents too, but initially it was decided that we would select 50 games for this book. I think everything that should be included is included. All things being equal, I tried to choose games where I could say something new" (A. Khalifman). An important bonus of the book is a brief theoretical overview of Botvinnik's favorite opening lines in their historical development.
The biographical essay was written by the famous journalist and international master Vladimir Barsky.
