Who is this book about
Joseph Henry Blackburn (1841-1924) was an English grandmaster, one of the strongest players in the world in the second half of the 19th century. He was called "Black Death", partly because of his black suit and beard, partly because of his aggressive, combative style and frequent victories with black pieces. Blackburn was a professional player who earned his living through tournaments, tours, and simultaneous play sessions (including blindfolded play), and he also became famous for the “shilling variant” — a trap that he set for amateurs for a bet of one shilling.
