There are museum classics, like those dead languages, which are still studied, but which no one any longer speaks. And there are living classics, which are constantly being renewed; these are ‘languages’ which every succeeding generation ‘speaks’ in its own way, enriching and passing them on to their descendants. Chess in general and opening theory in particular are no exceptions to the general rule. The first volume gives a detailed and high-quality analysis of the Veresov Opening, the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit, the Levitsky Variation and other set-ups. The second volume is devoted to the London Variation and openings named in honour of Zukertort, Torre, Colle and others. In general only one thing is demanded of the reader: a desire. A desire to avoid well-trodden opening set-ups, and a desire to try something new. Do away with routine play! If you have such a desire, this two-volume work will become an indispensable assistant in your aim for creative experiments. And for victory!

At the present day the statistics after 3.e4 is appalling for White: in 7 out of 10 games he suffers defeat! The author, not relying on his own store of words, constantly hides behind the ckassics, citing them right and left. The participants themselves commentated the games. The second games collection appeared a year later, in Germany. The author, Emil Schallopp, a well-known master and chess journalist, used analysis published in the English tournament book extensively, as well as in European chess periodicals. This book includes Schallopp’s commentary. Of course, many of E.Schallopp’s evaluations, especially as periains to the opening, have been disproved by modern theory. Nevertheless, the Russian Chess House left most of his commentary untouched, viewing it as a tribute to the epoch and believing it has great value in terms of chess history. In certain cases, analysis published by Schallopp’s successors and drastically reevaluating many key positions is provided. A few games have been commentated by S. Tarrash, G.Y. Levenfish and P.A.Romanovsky. The round overviews were written by B.Trubitsyn (rounds I-X and XVII-XXI) and B.I.Belensky (rounds XI-XVI). B.Trubitsyn also compiled the informational sources and wrote one of the introductory articles.

Such positions form the skeleton of all works on the endgame already published, but no one of these authors is able to resist the temptation to proceed further, from the simple to the complicated. So they deal with problematic positions, where what is required of a player is not only exact knowledge, but also stamina, fighting, spirit, will–to–win and so on. Thus you have here a collection of the 600 most standard (exact) endgame positions.

Nc6 in reply to either of White’s first moves – 1.e4 or 1..d4. The sequence 1.e4 Nc6 2.d4 d5. 3.e5, leading to French-type positions, occurred back in the games of Arom Nimzowitsch and received the name of the Nimzowitsch Defence. Modern praxis has significantly extended the horizons of the 1…Nc6 opening, and it ca now lead to interesting strategic situations, the pawn structures of which are typical of the most varied opening systems: French Defence, Scandinavian Defence, Ruy Lopez, Scotch Game, Pirc-Ufimtsev Defence, King’s Indian Defence, English Opening, Queen’s Indian Defence and Nimzo-Indian Defence! Of the great masters form the past who made contributions to the development of the 1…Nc6 opening, we should mention in particular Aron Nimzowitsch and Efim Bogoljubow, and of modern players – grandmasters Bent Larsen and Anthon Miles. In our times, when the theory of the opening stages is rapidly developing, the 1…Nc6 opening may prove to be a successful find for players seeking new and unusual paths from the very first moves.
