Chess Kursk (USSR) - art paintings Material: carbolite. The height of the king: 100 mm. Perfect condition. The complete set: 32 pieces. Chess pieces with artistic painting in excellent condition without the Board or box Was created in Russia with a beautiful work of wood combined with hand paintings. The gold pieces look as if they are styled on the Mongolians (Facially and helmets). This ties in with Baku Khan having sacked the city of Kursk in the 13th century. Baku Khan was the grandson of the more famous Genghis. Legend had it that Genghis's tribe had red hair, which also ties in with the gold pieces. Baku's army was also known as the golden horde. Talking about the shields, the gold piece shown has a coat of arms that although not Mongolian, bears close resemblance to the present day coat of arms for Kursk, but with different colours employed. The Kursk coat of arms is bend azure with three partridges argent. Is the colour change on the piece purely to highlight the connection to Kursk, but also to show that the gold pieces were the opposition to the Russian defenders The board is not included
