In your hands is a collection of the most precious and memorable works of the author - both written long ago, and lying for several decades in the archive, and born in recent years. My pen tests in various literary genres, including poetry, always surprised and pleased my father, the chess historian Isaac Linder. A strict fan of chess "classicism" and historical realism, he boldly co-authored a freethinker and, as critics from his beloved 19th century would say, a Greyhound painter. And I must say, the "docking" was successful. I took some pleasure in writing historical stories, and he began to indulge in elegant artistic digressions. For more than a quarter of a century, we have perfectly understood and complemented each other… This book is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the passionate propagandist of chess culture, chess encyclopedist, writer and sage Isaac Maxovich Linder, it is a thank you and a bow to his bright memory. Among its heroes are people who, by the will of fate, linked their lives with Chess. Photos of Boris Dolmatovsky, Alexander Kantorovich, Nikolai Zhuravk, from the archives of the state security service, Irina Alatortseva, Lyudmila Belavenets, Sergey Voronkov, Andrey Yelkov, Isaak and Vladimir Linder. -

For the sake of one and a half thousand years, from the time of the emergence of chess, up to now, people have been trying to render the true charm of this wise game through the pieces of chess they are made of, displaying outstanding talent, fantasy and resourcefulness . The miniature chessmen have always been of the works of art, no matter what material they were made of (ivory or silver, mother-of-pearl or porcelain), and whether they reflected people's life at different times or were of abstact character. >
The author of the album is a well-known Russian historian. I.M. Linder who describes the stages of evolution of figurative and abstract chess pieces from medieval to modem forms. This description is based on a thorough study of private collections and museum pieces. The richness of the art of chess pieces is shown in its entirety, including such archaeological finds as the ancient chess pieces from Afrasiab (seventh to eighth centuries, Uzbekistan), unique porcelain, ivory and metal sets of all times and lands.
The album, containing 250 black-and-white and color illustrations, is a good gift to chess collectors and all lovers of this ancient game.

It reveals the broader, deeper impact of the game on a person, her place in society, the moral and educational purpose, the amazing multidimensionality caused by the triune formula of chess - art, science, sport.
