    Teodor Lembovich Shmulian He was born in the family of assistant attorney attorney Leib Yudelevich (Lev Yulievich) Shmulian (1883-1944) and Isabella Solomonovna Levitskaya, a native of Kherson. He grew up in Odessa, in his parents' apartment on Nezhinskaya Street, 42. After the revolution, my father worked as an attorney and taught at the Institute of National Economy (Inarhoz), and after its dissolution - at a law school. In 1938, L. Yu. Shmulian was arrested and sentenced to 6 years of forced labor camps, died shortly before the end of his term. Theodor Shmulian worked as a design engineer at the Krasny Kotelshchik Taganrog plant. In 1940, fulfilled the norm for the title of candidate for the master of sports. Author of the book "The middle of the game of checkers" (Moscow: Physical Culture and Sports, 1954. - 307 p.). The debut in Russian drafts (the game of Shmulyan, first used in the RSFSR championship in Ryazan, 1949) and its variant (the victim of Shmulian — Markachev) is named after him. He developed the “system of Shmulian coefficients” adopted by the Russian drafts code and approved by FIDE in the modification for chess V. Ya. Dvorkovich.
