Alvis Vitolins (1946-1997) is a seven-time champion of Latvia, an acute-attacking chess player, one of the last debut innovators of the pre-computer era. In blitz, he is a world-class player and a regular sparring partner of world champion Mikhail Tal. Vitolins often used gambits and his novelties in the Sicilian defense, the Spanish game, the Nimtsovich defense and the Bogolyubov defense were used at the highest level, including challenger tournaments and matches for the world champion title.
